A Pitta Diet To Balance Your Dosha

A Pitta diet will consist of foods that have the astringent, bitter, and sweet tastes. Avoid the tastes that increase the pita Dosha such as salty, pungent, and sour.

The Pitta diet should favor foods that are cool or warm with moderately heavy textures. Also favored for the Pitta are Western, mild Indian and mild Chinese. Avoid pickles, yogurt, sour cream, and cheese. Avoid vinegar in salad dressing; use lemon juice instead. Alcohol should should not be consumed.

For breakfast favor cold cereals, cinnamon toast and apple tea. Avoid coffee, orange juice and doughnuts - they aggravate pitta.

These lists will help guide you in selecting your daily diet.

Meats

Chicken (white meat), egg whites, freshwater fish, rabbit, shrimp, turkey (white meat), and venison.

Vegetables

Acorn squash, artichoke, asparagus, cooked beets, bell pepper, broccoli, brussels sprouts, butternut squash, cabbage, cooked carrots, cauliflower, celery, cilantro, corn, cucumber, green beans, kale, leafy greens, lettuce, mushrooms, okra, black olives, cooked sweet onions, parsley, parsnips, peas, green peppers, sweet Peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cooked radishes, rutabaga, spaghetti squash, sprouts, summer squash, scallopini squash, taro root, watercress, winter squash, zucchini.

Dairy

Unsalted butter, unsalted cheese, cottage cheese, cow’s milk, unsalted goat’s cheese, ice cream, fresh yogurt.

Fruits

Apples, applesauce, apricots, berries, cherries, coconut, dates, figs, red/purple grapes, ripe mangoes, melons, oranges, pears, sweet pineapple (limited), sweet plums, prunes, quince, raisins, watermelon.

Grains

Barley, granola, oat bran, oats, pancakes, pasta, rice, rice cakes, tapioca, wheat, wheat bran.

Legumes

Black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, kidney beans, lima beans, mung beans, navy beans, peas, pinto beans, soybeans, soy cheese, soy milk, split peas, tofu, white beans.

Seeds

Flax, popcorn, pumpkin, sunflower.

Oils

Sunflower, ghee, canola, olive, soy, flaxseed.

Spices

Fresh basil, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, dill, fresh ginger, mint, parsley, peppermint, saffron, spearmint, turmeric, wintergreen.

Drinks

Apple juice, apricot juice, berry juice, black tea, carob, cherry juice, grape juice, mango juice, mixed vegetable juice, peach nectar, pear juice, pomegranate juice, prune juice, rice milk, soy milk.

Condiments

Black pepper, chutney, mango, coriander leaves, sprouts.

Sweetners

Barley malt syrup,brown rice syrup, maple syrup, sugar cane juice.

Eating a diet of pitta increasing foods as well as overwork, overexertion, and overheatingmay very well contribute to a tendency to be hostile or angry, controlling, impatience and jealous.
