Ayurveda Diet and Balance

The element of diet is covered in great detail in Ayurveda. Since it adopts a holistic approach to healing, Ayurveda recognizes the positive and negative sides of diet and the importance of proper balance. Not only taken for granted are the basic foods required for nourishment like proteins, fats and carbohydrates, but other foods are recommended that augment and provide a source of energy to both body and soul.

Diets, along with the habits of an individual, establish the level of his mental and physical health. But diet is an inconsistent determined by the body structure and digestive system, and varies from individual to individual. In Ayurveda a diet is advised according to your specific dosha in which there is a wide range of choice. Once you know your dosha you can work out a balanced diet according to the foods compatible with it.

However Ayurveda mentions some factors that should be borne in mind when drawing up a diet, which as mentioned, will require to be specially structured to suit the physical characteristics and dosha of the specific individual.

• All foods should contain abundant quantities of necessary nutrients. The various foods should complement each other to ensure inclusion of all these nutrients.

• The physique of the person and the level of physical activity will dictate the quantitative intake.

• Taste preferences of the individual.

• Place and climatic conditions.

• Other prevailing physical disorders especially digestive.

An Ayurvedic diet envisages the consumption of organically grown, natural food abjuring those cultivated in an environment of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. Also the use of artificial flavors and preservatives is discouraged. Ayurveda strongly recommends consumption of meals at regular intervals to aid proper digestion and avoid disorders arising out of an irregular routine.
